The Banda Plástica of Barcelos is part of the Cultural Center of Barcelos and it is a musical, artistic and recreational group, which aim is to disseminate the most popular and traditional music of Portugal and of the World.
It was born in 1976 to animate the second part of the show promoted by the Cultural Centre of Barcelos and to complement the Choir of Barcelos. However, this band’s performances were a success. Its first public and official appearance took place in Orca, Fundão, in 1976.
This band never broke the relation with the Cultural Centre of Barcelos and to which most of their elements belong to.
The idea of the creation of this band was genuine and spontaneous and it was a success. Its goal was to get together, to share their emotions, their joys and sorrows, to communicate with the world through music.
This band’s image takes us into a dream and fantasy atmosphere. Their multicolour uniforms, blue jacket with fancy buttons, white pants with red or blue stripes, fancy hat, papillon (tie), inspired by the musicians made of clay are typical from Barcelos’s handicraft. These characteristics connect them to Barcelos’s cultural roots and that give them authenticity.
The Banda Plástica is, undoubtedly, a serious case of popularity and success. Wherever it goes it takes willingness and joy.
