NOSSA SENHORA DE BELÉM CHAPEL

Póvoa de Varzim
Description
Small chapel characteristic of a rural location - as Belém was in the 19th century. XIX - with farm farms, but where also lived workers of Póvoa.

It was on the face of the old road to Barcelos, so it was a crossing point for the almocreves and animals transporting the goods to the growing village of Póvoa.

The chapel was built on an old chapel already dedicated to Our Lady of Bethlehem, which justifies the origin of the toponym.

It was blessed in 1826 and its traditional construction of apparent granite walls and plastered granite masonry is typical of the 19th century neoclassical and eclectic buildings. XIX

The altarpieces are neoclassical and have some good 19th century imagery, namely the Holy Family of Bethlehem.
