Paradela Arch

Tarouca
Description
This small monument is a memorial arch from the XII, XIII century, of granite, roman, and, according to bibliographic source, there were initially three arches,   disappearing two of them with the passage of the years.

It is said that when the Barcelos Earl's body was to be taken from Lalim to be buried in St. John Monastery of Tarouca, it stopped at this location, and in memory of this fact, were erected the arches in that place.

However the opinions on the arch of Paradela differ from author to author: for some, it is a monumental milestone that rose to demarcate the boundary of  Couto do Mosteiro of São João deTarouca, for others it is a funerary monument built to the grave of Diogo Anes, who in 1175 ( XII century) was the owner of the land.

Note - The place name Paradela has a topographical sense: a difficult climb at the top of which you can relax.

The Tarouca Municipality invites you to discover the Varosa Valley.
