The urban centers were developed around three poles. The religious pole: being the church the point of reference and where the community used to meet. The mercantile pole: being the main square (Terreiro) the place where the fair and the main economic activities took place during all the Middle Ages. The military and administrative pole: being the Castle the place where the administrative institutions were located for ruling and defending the village. It was on the basis of these three poles and along the road that links Valença to Viana do Castelo, that Vila Nova de Cerveira has its own development.
Due to these factors, the “Terreiro” became the center of the village, around which were built some of the most important and impressive buildings were made. One of these examples is Casa Verde, dated from the late XIX century, which reflects a large fortune won in Brazil.
